realization

We come home changed:
dead memories left behind
in a country a thousand miles away

Sharp words softened
by the practice of forgiving,
hastening what was once immovable
toward a new realization

where the past is remembered
more slowly, and the illusion of love
is not all that we see
on each other’s faces

  1. Sharp words softened
by the practice of forgiving – I really liked the descriptive quality of this sentence in particular. Wouldn’t it be wonderful if all sharp words were softened by the practice of forgiving!

  2. I especially like how the three stanzas work together–the first leaving behind, the second in the act of foregiveness and the third in acceptance of reality and one another. Really lovely, Daniel.
